Denture Repair Options

denture Baltimore, MD

If you have dentures, you know that denture damage is inevitable. Between accidental cracks and broken denture teeth and your constantly changing facial structure, a lot can happen over time that may result in the need for one of the three denture repair options. The most popular denture repair options include denture reline, denture rebase and an adjustment. Depending on the extent of the damage to your denture, a general dentist will likely recommend one of these options.

Denture rebase

A denture rebase procedure is an ideal repair option if the denture is still in good shape or merely has minor cracks in the base. The procedure itself is affordable, though it may take longer to complete than an adjustment or reline. The rebasing process involves a general dentist replacing the denture’s acrylic base to help stabilize it. Rebasing makes it possible to repair a crack or other minor damage without having to take a denture totally apart.

Denture reline

Denture reline is a type of repair that involves resurfacing the damaged part of a denture. It is a simple, affordable process. As an added bonus, it can often be completed in a general dentist’s office. There are two different types of relines, though. A soft reline and hard reline.

Soft relines are popular among denture wearers because they are considered more comfortable than hard relines. A general dentist often performs a soft reline by adding liquid polymer to the worn-down or damaged part of a denture. When the polymer dries, it acts as a cushion, making the denture more comfortable. Hard relines, on the other hand, are not as soft and may feel less comfortable than soft relines.

Hard relines are similar to soft relines in that they help reshape the damaged or worn-down part of a denture. However, a different type of material is used in a hard reline process. In soft relines, the resin used dries into a cushion-like material. When the resin used in a hard reline dries, it dries hard like the base of a denture. Because of this, hard relines are a more permanent repair solution. Though hard relines can sometimes be performed in a general dentist’s office, other times they may have to be shipped to a dental lab.

Denture adjustment

A denture adjustment is typically performed when a wearer begins to notice their dentures are getting loose or uncomfortable. This happens over time. As denture wearers age, their facial structure changes and bone density in their jaws decreases. When this happens, dentures may begin to shift in a wearer’s mouth, causing discomfort. An adjustment can fix this and make dentures fit like new.

Repair your dentures today

When your dentures do not feel right or you notice a chipped tooth, contact a general dentist. Depending on the extent of the damage, your denture may be a good candidate for an adjustment, reline or rebase. All three of these options are affordable and can typically be done in a dentist’s office.
